Elder TreeElder trees are native throughout the British Isles and grow to a maximum of 30ft 9m. Elder trees usually flourish wherever the nitrogen content of the soil is high. Elder trees grow very well in rich neglected ground. Elder trees grow quickly and can colonise an area if not pruned each year. The large instantly recognisable white flower heads of the Elder tree appear in early July followed by a mass of small black berries. Elderberries make excellent wines and jams and are rich in vitamin C. The Elder tree is often found in hedgerows. We do not recommend for Elder trees to be planted in new hedges as they can grow quickly resulting in large gaps once established.
