Copper Beech Tree

Potentially a large tree it can grow to 120ft 36m it is too tall to be grown as a specimen tree in the average garden. However it forms an excellent hedge as it can be clipped closely. The leaves turn russetbrown in winter and will remain over winter if pruned in midsummer. It thrives in a wide variety of soils and will tolerate shade. When grown as a tree the wood is quite pale and has a delicate figure. It is used extensively in furniture manufacture. Tree supplied is 40 60cm in height.

Field Maple

The Field Maple is native to southern England a small tree which if left to grow will reach a height of 85ft 26m. Field Maple trees can make an excellent dense deciduous hedge if regularly clipped. Lime Tree

Lime trees are native to Limestone soils in England and Wales. The Lime tree does not produce the strong sucker growth around the base of the trunk often associated with the Large Leaved Lime Tilia platyphylos. Flowers from mature Lime trees attract bees in early July. Lime leaves are alternate and 13in long they are dark green and shiny on top with orange tufts of hair in vein junctions on the undersides. The timber is ideal for carving and turning. Lime tree wood is still used for sounding boards and keys of pianos and organs.
English Yew Tree

English Yews grow especially well on chalk. They resist pollution well and can flourish in the shade of taller trees but little will grow in the shade they themselves cast. When planted as a hedge and clipped the Yew forms one of the most distinguished of screens. The bark is poisonous and so is the cut foliage though horses and cattle can sometimes graze on living yew boughs without ill effect. The scarlet berries are harmless but the seeds are poisonous. Common Alder Tree

Common Alder Trees will grow to around 70ft 22m. The Common Alder thrives in moist to wet ground it is a common inhabitant of riverbanks low lying areas or upland areas with high rainfall. Alder leaves are slow to decay if they falll into water and as such the trees should not be planted too close to riverbanks. Nodules on roots which contain bacteria that fix nitrogen make it a valuable species for enriching poor ground.
Sweet Chestnut Tree

Growing to around 90ft30m. It will become a large spreading tree if grown in isolation. It is native to southern Europe but is widely planted elsewhere for its edible nuts the traditional Christmas roasted chestnuts. The wood is used for panelling and beams. Due to its resistance to exposure it is also used for fence palings.
White Poplar Tree

The White Poplar suckers freely and can be grown to form windbreaks where other trees will not survive. This species of White Poplar is introduced and widely planted in parks and gardens mainly for the beauty of its foliage. White Poplar flourishes in polluted air or near the sea.
